Browser Extensions and Online Bidding
How privacy tools can interrupt live auction connections
Modern auction platforms rely on a continuous exchange of information between the browser and the auction itself. For most users, that connection happens quietly in the background. Bids appear, bidder activity updates and the auction team can respond in real time.
However, browser privacy tools can sometimes interfere with that connection.
Extensions and applications designed to block tracking activity, including AVG AntiTrack and similar privacy tools, may restrict browser activity that they identify as tracking or background communication. In some circumstances, this can also affect legitimate real-time functionality used by auction platforms.
For Auctions Live subscribers and online bidders, that matters because a connection issue during a live auction is very different from a normal website loading problem.
Why Browser Extensions Can Affect Live Auctions
Online bidding depends on the browser maintaining reliable communication with the auction platform throughout the auction.
Privacy and security tools can change how websites behave by blocking certain requests, clearing cookies, restricting background activity or preventing connections they consider unnecessary. This is usually intended to protect the user, but it can occasionally interfere with websites that depend on continuous real-time communication.
AVG itself advises that AVG AntiTrack may, in rare cases, prevent webpages from loading correctly. Its support guidance recommends adding affected websites to the Allowed Websites list or temporarily disabling browser protection when troubleshooting an affected website.
What This Can Mean for Auctions Live Subscribers
For an agent, auctioneer, administrator or team member managing an auction through Auctions Live, a browser extension that interferes with the live connection may affect access to the Online Bidding channel.
Depending on the nature of the interruption, this may result in the subscriber being unable to connect properly to incoming online bidder activity or experiencing interruptions while monitoring and managing bids.
The important point is that the rest of the webpage may still appear normal. A user may be able to open the platform while the real-time connection required for live bidding is being restricted in the background.
Before a live auction begins, subscribers should therefore confirm that the Online Bidding channel is connected and operating normally rather than relying only on the fact that the page has loaded.
What This Can Mean for Online Bidders
The same issue can affect a buyer participating remotely.
An online bidder may be able to open the auction page and watch the auction, but a privacy extension or browser protection tool may interfere with the connection used to send or receive live bidding information.
That creates a potentially important distinction between clicking the bid button and the bid being successfully communicated through the online bidding process.
Online bidders should pay close attention to the normal on-screen confirmation and auction status after placing a bid. If the platform does not respond as expected, the bidder should not simply assume the bid has been received.
Where there is any doubt, the bidder should immediately contact the selling agency or auction team using the contact details provided for the campaign.
What We Recommend Before a Live Auction
Subscribers and online bidders should use a current version of a supported browser and minimise unnecessary browser extensions when participating in a live auction.
In particular, if AVG AntiTrack or another anti-tracking, privacy, ad blocking or browser security extension is installed, consider checking its settings before the auction begins.
- ●Confirm the Auctions Live page loads and remains connected before the auction starts.
- ●Check that the Online Bidding channel is connected if you are managing incoming bids.
- ●If using AVG AntiTrack, add the relevant Auctions Live website to AVG's Allowed Websites list where appropriate.
- ●If a connection problem continues, temporarily disable the relevant browser privacy extension and reconnect.
- ●Avoid installing or changing browser extensions immediately before an auction.
- ●For important auction events, test the browser and connection in advance rather than waiting until bidding is underway.
Privacy Protection and Auction Reliability Can Coexist
Privacy extensions have a legitimate purpose and, in most situations, can operate without causing issues. The concern is not that these tools should never be used.
The issue is that live online auctions are time sensitive. A restriction that might simply require a page refresh on an ordinary website can become much more significant when an auction is moving quickly and bids are being submitted in real time.
For agencies using Auctions Live, it is worth including browser readiness as part of the normal auction preparation process. For buyers, checking the bidding environment before the auction provides greater confidence that their browser is ready to communicate with the platform when bidding begins.
Technology works best on auction day when it becomes almost invisible. A few simple checks beforehand can help keep the focus where it belongs, on the auction, the competition and the bids being placed.
