When App Buttons Don’t Work
Simple steps to fix unresponsive app buttons on your device
We’ve all been there - you tap a button in an app and nothing happens. No error message, no spinning wheel, just silence.
The good news? It’s usually something simple, and you can often fix it in just a few minutes.
Follow this step-by-step guide before reaching out for extra help.
Step 1: Refresh the page or reload the app
- Pull down to refresh the screen.
- If that doesn’t work, log out and back in (if the app allows it).
Step 2: Force close and reopen the app
This gives the app a clean restart.
- iPhone/iPad: Open the app switcher, swipe the app up to close it, then reopen.
- Android: Open the app switcher, swipe the app away, then reopen.
Step 3: Update your device and browser
Outdated software is a common cause of tap-but-nothing-happens issues.
- iPhone/iPad: Update iOS/iPadOS and Safari in Settings.
- Android: Open Google Play and update Chrome and Android System WebView.
Tip: WebView is what many apps use to display web pages. Keeping it updated fixes a lot of hidden problems.
Step 4: Check your internet connection (and VPN)
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- If you’re using a VPN, turn it off temporarily and try again.
Step 5: Turn off content blockers (just for testing)
Ad-blockers and privacy tools can sometimes block the scripts that power buttons.
- iPhone/iPad (Safari): Tap the aA menu in the address bar → Website Settings → turn off content blockers.
- Test the app again. Don’t forget to turn blockers back on afterwards.
Step 6: Clear cached data and cookies
Old files saved by your browser can cause buttons to stop working.
- iPhone/iPad (Safari): Go to Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data → delete data for the affected site. Still stuck? Try Clear History and Website Data (note: this signs you out of most sites).
- Android (Chrome): Tap ⋮ > Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data. Select Cookies and Cached files, then clear. Start with the Last 24 hours.
Tip: If possible, clear data just for the one site instead of everything; it’s less disruptive.
Step 7: Double-check device settings
- Keep at least 1–2 GB of free space on your device.
- If your phone is heavily zoomed in, reset zoom to default so buttons don’t get pushed off-screen.
Step 8: Restart your device
- Do a full restart to reset background services and clear temporary glitches.
